Kokoskrab steelt en vernielt peperdure camera Nederlandse onderzoekster

Annabel van Dorrestein doet in de jungle van het Christmaseiland onderzoek, maar die is bruut verstoort door een kokoskrab. Haar warmtebeeldcamera was plotseling verdwenen en haar apparatuur vernield. Door de kokoskrab, ook wel de klapperdief genoemd.

3000 euro

Toen ze ‘s ochtends toen ze wakker werd een kijkje wilde gaan nemen was de camera weg. “Het statief was omgevallen, er zaten overal diepe krassen op en een stekker was helemaal verbogen,” zo vertelt ze aan de NOS. De camera van 3000 euro is verdwenen.

Giant robber steels $6,000 thermal imaging monocular camera in daring night-time raid! My friend @travel_bel who has been studying the Christmas Island Flying Fox for her PhD, left the ruggedised camera filming bats overnight, firmly attached to a tripod and a huge battery. In the morning, the camera was gone. The tripod was knocked over, the battery deeply gouged with huge claw marks and the charge cable (that was physically screwed into the camera) had been completely mangled and ripped out! We spent hours searching the jungle all around the crime scene, but found nothing. We found plenty of very big robber crabs loitering around (aka coconut crabs, the world's largest land-living invertebrate which can live about 80 years, have a leg-span of 1m and claws that match the pressure of a lion's jaws), but none harbouring the camera. Judging from the claw marks and the distance it evidently dragged this chunky camera, it must have been huge!!! These robber crabs are an impressive force and stand their ground even against vehicles - drivers here often have to get out and physically push them off the road at night to drive past - and they actively hunt other crabs too, pouncing on them! But yes, if anyone sees one trying to sell a thermal camera, please let me know! Treat as eight-armed and dangerous. Verdachte

Er was voor Dorrestein en fotograaf Chris Bray, die haar hielp met de zoektocht, meteen maar één verdachte en dat was de kokoskrab. Deze kreeftachtige kunnen 1 meter groot worden en wegen vier kilo. De klapperdief is ook een beschermde diersoort. Dorrestein hoopt nu dat ze via de verzekering de camera terug krijgt. “Dan plak ik er sowieso een zendertje op zodat ik hem de volgende keer kan terugvinden.”
